Vibes on a Summers Day, Sunday 3rd February, Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
Well, this music festival goes by the motto "everybody loves the sunshine" - heck, i will drink to that! I worship the sunshine! By well, Melbourne didn't turn on the sunshine for vibes....so what's new???
Em and i rocked up to join the long queue at the Mucis Bowl, (after dousing oursleves in glitter) we both learnt from Big Day Out that carrying bags was annoying so we ditched the bags for the day, and made sure we had pockets....(maybe that's why i didn't find a nice vibey dancey dobechee dobechee guy...the whole unified theory of pockets happening....).
One thing that grabbed my attention about the vibes crowd compared to Big Day Out Crowd was that it was way more classy. There were actually nicely dressed guys around....if you are in the whole dancey, vibey, dobechee dobechee popping e's scene you definatly need to wear denim (Mooks knee lenght skits, with off the sholder tops, or Lee jeans with a M one 11 Tshirts)...oh, and all those runner type shoes (no, NOT cons or vans) that you see in the shops....this crowd had definate class....not much billabong, rip curl or mambo happening at all......once we got in, still more definate class around! The food was way better, no KFC or pizza hut, but you could buy suschi, baked potatoes with toppings, crepes, pita bread thingys.....classy......yep, i reckon i might just join that scene...except popping the e's part.......
The atmosphere was chill out vibey, and once Em and I sussed out everything i bought a Groove Aramada tshirt (it's real funky, on the front is says "I See You Baby" and on the back at the bottom it says "Shakin' that ass!"...and it is a girl size so it's tight, not the big baggy ones....
Em and i listened to some DJ and much to our horror we saw someone do a bong (i though it was supposed to be a pill popping crowd...??)..out in the open man! Call me naive but that is the first time i've actually seen someone do a bong in real life (you see it on tv and stuff, you see the bongs at monash markets but well...i think i walk around obvilious to it all...which might be a good thing...? Although i did see someone shoot up once and she drove away and she had a baby in the back seat...i was mortified...sorry..back on track now...)
Watching 'Save the Last Dance' the night before came in handy as that particular DJ played a song from it 'Love like this before' - the Crockly Clan remix...it's a cool song....anyway, we saw a few DJ's, the resin dogs and Llorca.....they were pretty cool but we were really haning out for Groove Armada and Jamiroquai.
Groove Armada actually came on an hour later than scheduled...Norman Jay played the warm up to Groove Armada and to Jamiroquai (his set was split in two). Groove Armada rocked...they are a six (or nine?) piece band and it is actually really cool to see what they actually use to make some of the noises in the songs....like a fry pan!!! There are two guys in Groove Armada, one controls the computer and the other plays a few instuments (piano -or keyboard...same diff!- and the sax part that you hear in 'Superstylin'). But they have a female vocalist and a guys on guitars, percussion etc....they were really good...disappointed that they did not play "I See You Baby" in full and they didn't even play "Syperstylin'" in full, but what they did play they played three times coz the crowd went off mate! The computer did the computer thingys and stuffed up during 'My Friend' but they quickly recovered and they played it acoustic style....nice thinking....we were treated....one hour and a half man they played for! I liked Groove Armada, but i think Basement Jaxx put on more of a show with the dancers and different female singers etc.....
norman jay played for yet anouther hour then it was time for jamiroquai...yay! Jay K is a real "i love the spotlight" guy....he really did entertain the crowd with his dancing, jumping around and he even did a stint at the one of the back stages (not really a stage though...and i don't think security was too pleased) and ran down one side alisle...only 2 metres from Em and I...so that was cool....the show was pretty cool...cool lighting and smoke etc....he involved the crowd and i bet it was amazing to see the 30 000 hands in the air from the front....he played all their hits from Cosmic Girl to Canned Heat, Little L, You Give Me Something, Deeper Underground, Space Cowboy (or whatever the song is) but i was VERY disappointed that they did not play "Virtual Insanity"....how rude! it was a great song! They finished off i think with the first song from their new album....it was a while ago so i can't quite remember....i just feel sorry for the other DJ's who were playing at the same time as Groove Armada and Jamiroquai..i mean, would they even have had an audience at all...?? Oh yeah...the fairies....
Anyway, it was a great day, more relaxing and chilling out than Big Day Out, more classier (gotta love class) but somehow, i think Vibes 2002 was, as Em said to sum it up in a sentence
"A Jamiroquai concert with Groove Armada as support with a bunch of other DJ's to see and food to eat while you wait"
PS - i could've gone CRAZY with linkage but i can't be bothered.....!
