The great lies of our times

Postby Sparker » Tue Jul 29, 2008 1:28 pm

Not too long ago, if you looked good when you were 40 or 50, it was because you took care of yourself, now it is because you have had surgery, or so public opinion would have you believe.
If a person is muscular, or successful at sport, they are using steroids, or so public opinion would have you believe.
If an ugly man has a beautiful wife, it is because he is rich, or so public opinion would have you believe.
And the latest in a long line of happily espoused lies is the great download death. Two weeks running, in the Green Guide (the TV Guide in the Age), there has been a discussion of why Lost is doing so badly in the ratings. In both articles, the blame was attributed to downloading, as Lost watchers couldn't wait for it to come out on TV, so they downloaded it. Neither article bothered to explore the idea that maybe, just maybe, people were staying away in droves because it was crap. It didn't occur to these writers that, by their logic, the only high rating shows are those watched by computer illiterate people with patience.
So Lost has become the latest casualty to downloading. I wonder if Grindhouse and Serenity failed for the same reasons. Probably. And I bet all the actors have had surgery and are on steroids.....

I watched the first season of Lost, albeit downloaded after the fact, and was captivated. Interesting story, decent writing and acting. Great stuff.

Second season I watched maybe 5 episodes and got bored. The spark of ingenuity was gone. Maybe when it is all over, I'll ask the couple of Lost fans whether it was all worth it and then go back and watch the other seasons.

Half a season of Battlestar Galactica to go... and then the void.

Was BS (sad abbreviation, really) what you wanted it to be? One of the guys here is caught by it.

I disliked some of the resolution of BSG.
Worth watching the whole thing I believe. Even though you may be let down.

Long running TV series are very hard to end. Especially a series with any form or mystery.
